When one quotes a question within a sentence, like «I don't know how we will do this» – such a sort of questions is called an indirect question. Indirect questions are of two kinds:
a) those corresponding to direct questions which contain a question word (who, why, how etc.). In this case they remain unchanged when quoted as indirect questions in a sentence. Compare the question standing by itself:
question word

|
Kon So Savi Sosqe Kana Kaj Sar
|
pinʒarel e Oliveres? dine la anglal? tasvir sikaven? na xalǎn ti zumi? avel i Tamàra? beśel laqi amalin? siklǒl o ćhavo?
|
and the question quoted in a sentence:

|
Pućhav tumen Śun Na dikhav Naśti xalǒvav Khonik na ʒanel Bisterdǎs sas Phen manqe

kon so savi sosqe kana kaj sar
|
pinʒarel e Oliveres. dine la anglal. tasvir sikaven. na xalǎn ti zumi. avel i Tamàra. beśel laqi amalin. siklǒl o ćhavo.
|
b) those corresponding to direct questions with no question word inside (and usually written with an upside-down question mark at the beginning of the question – see padmad 3).
When quoted in a sentence, the link word val is put at the beginning:
¿Pinʒares me dades? > Pućhav tut val pinʒares me dades.
¿I ćhaj xalǒvel rromanes? > Na ʒanav val i ćhaj xalǒvel rromanes.
In both direct and indirect questions of this kind, the form val na or not may be added – it makes the question more clear but conveys a slight feeling of impatience:
¿Kames te aves amençar, val na? > Phen manqe val kames te aves amençar, val na. As a rule, question marks are not used in indirect questions.
