Flexion of masculine inherited nouns
The grammatical forms of Rromani nouns are not the same in words of Asian origin (also called inherited – mainly Indian, Persian, Armenian and Anatolian Greek) and in words of European origin (also called borrowed – including Turkish loans since as a rule they have been borrowed on the European soil). The present padmad is intended to systematize the grammatical forms of masculine inherited nouns, already introduced in padmad Nr 7. One has to distinguish nouns ending with the stressed vowel -o and nouns ending in a consonant – let us see both cases with a buxlo adjective:

vocalic (-o) ending

consonantal ending

singular

plural

singular

plural

A-ćham

laćho gaʒo

laćhe gaʒe

terno amal

terne amala

B-ćham

laćhe gaʒes

laćhe gaʒen

terne amales

terne amalen

Remember that the B-ćham is used for nouns expressing people (or mammals) who UNDERGO the action of the verb of the sentence or are connected with a postposition;

Click below to see nominal groups made of an article (sometimes – or a demonstrative), an adjective and a noun.

A-ćham (o phuro gaʒo)
B-ćham (e phure gaʒes)
B-ćham+postp. (e phure gaʒes -qe/-ça)

same thing in the plural:

A-ćham (e phure gaʒe)
B-ćham (e phure gaʒen)
B-ćham+postp. (e phure gaʒen -qe/-ça)

You may observe that when they include a postposition, the latter is at the very end of the group.

Idioms and proverbs >>

Of a hard-worker, one says o butǎrno Rrom/manuś vi katar-o barr ikalel khoni/kiral/khil.
There is a Rromani saying in praise of work: khanćesqe na beś, maj laćhes khanćesqe ker butǐ – jekh dǐves ka dikhes so tǐ butǐ navlìsa khanćesqe.
